what a night! packed with people ...looking, shopping, chatting...i had so much fun! the great thing was....everyone GOT IT! that was so amazing to me i met the most fabulous, artistic women from all walks of life...thank you thank you ....you have no idea how YOU made my week in Chicago! here are some picsa of my booth set up for vendor night before the mad dash of shopping frenzy began...

ok....i have never taught at such a large venue...as CREATE with Cloth Paper Scissors....well not in the last 10 years ...i was excited, a bit nervous (i am not going to lie)....i teach art to 300 kids a week....but adults? not so much. let me tell you I LOVED IT! both my classes had the most amazing women in it! all ages all levels....all fantastic!!! my first class was the Birdscape class...and we rocked it! Their work was beyond believe to me! each student took my directions and created fabulous ART with their own spin/take on a Birdscape which is totally what i wanted to happen...here are some pics of the most fabulous ladies in my class! and their amazing work! xx

THANK YOU LADIES for the most amazing time...your inspiration and enthusiasm made me so thrilled to have the opportunity to work with you! remember we LOVE ...heavy gel matte medium, walnut spray and my secret ingredient of shimmer love! we also LOVE shaper paper, HVAC tape and Pariscraft!

the REALLY is because my life is moving and grooving around me and i am trying to get a grip. change forces you to take a look at your life, see what is important, hold those things close and brace your self. change is good, that's what they say, we'll see??? i am so excited to be headed to Chicago in a couple of weeks to teach at the CREATE RETREAT with Cloth PAper Scissors! I have been creating the kits that will be used for my classes!

it is HOT! in new england...sticky, hot and humid...as my studio is not air conditioned i have not been spending much time creating...early in the morning before it gets steamy, maybe. i did have a burst of energy yesterday and started making some snowmen. these are works-in-progress...i still have to add some sparkle and embellishments...i learned my lesson last year when between thanksgiving and christmas i was CRAZY making these guys. the thing i love about , these snowmen is putting all the piece together, making the crazy little hats and scarfs, adding personality to each piece... i am very excited in november i will be co teaching a class at ARTASCOPE in Maine...portland maine! more on this later....we will be creating snowmen and other fabulous holiday decor....soon....soon i will be sharing...i will be teaching this class with Catherine Mathews-Scanlon who has some amazing ideas!

these pieces are a few examples of the completed work from the dvd!

it felt funny making that dvd, where the focus was on building up surfaces, but on the dvd i am not really completing work...i talk about layers (who doesn't) and these pieces are finito! after layers and layers ...this last painting of the dress is the piece i created in the promo, several folks emailed me about seeing that piece finished...the bottom of the painting is the tile backer tape, here you can really see the textured surface after all the paint is applied! these are not great pics....my camera is being wonky but you get the main idea.

i am actually doing a rain dance in new england today...we need rain bad, and it is an excuse to have a lazy day! peace,love ART.

my upcoming dvd with Cloth Paper Scissors is all about surface build up....ever look at a white canvas and think.....arrrggghhhh....so white....so canvasy....in this dvd i demonstrate tons of ways and techniques to begin building up your canvas surface....from plaster to paper mache....put some dimension in your art! i would be thrilled if people could view this video play with techniques and make them their own! so often in art one idea leads to another....inspiration stops by at the most unsuspecting times! i just got back from a once in a lifetime vacation and i will be posting pics soon! enjoy your lazy days of summer!

this was our last day of camp this week....we did some gyotaku fish printing, paintings on silk hoops, we created symmetrical butterflies, funky pollack inspired sculptures...and statue of liberties! we had a great week....and next week will be all new projects! great job kid artists!

day 2 into Art CAmp...i was thinking last night...i teach art all year why do i love the 2 weeks of camp i teach in the summer SO much, love the year long teaching gig also , but it is a different vibE....then it came to me ,...the summer is all about ART FOR ART SAKE! no grading kids art (UGH) no school goals,no assessment, no lesson plans, no meetings, no paper work! no list of objectives, did i mention no meetings? kids creating art just because THEY LOVE ART! and i get to work with them without worrying about all the other rig-a-ma-roll which makes my head explode! that is why i love my summer art camp! and now some fabulous kid art to share!

well... it is no secret that i am a HUGE fan of kids ArT! i have been an art teacher in the same school for 20 years! in fact it is the only job i have ever had (except waitressing)...during the summer i run a 2 week art camp for kids ages 6-10 with a friend. my daughter HArly works with me....the camp is in the town i live in (not the town i teach in) so i bring my usual art tricks with me to camp. check out the kids work.....

the new CPS came in the mail yesterday! I was floored...as in sitting on the floor going "hot flash"....as i literally had no idea my paintings were going to be on the cover! these are mixed media bird paintings created on plaster board. i love this technique because you can carve and scratch into the plaster, thus it is messy and therapeutic to do. this is one technique i covered on the CPS dvd i shot last month....i have been into birds lately because my kids are teenagers (which could really be another new blog) and i feel like they are flying out of the nest...so i am thrilled and honored to be a cover girl this summer with CPS. ! thank you!

my elementary school art exhibit was last week. the kids take home their art portfolios, which is all the amazing art they create all year. the front of the portfolio has a " stamp" on it and I tell the kids to write anything about art they want! they are spoken like true artists....

this piece is a paper mache heart on canvas, i am totally into the stitching on canvas now.....who would have thought! ohhh and THICK gobs of paint! using my fingers to paint! try that!

i love this piece...a vintage paper doll dress on canvas!

well....two weeks ago I went to colorado to shoot a video with Cloth Paper Scissors! lots of prep work before the shoot, and butterflies for the first few takes....then it was actually rather fun....the video explains several different techniques i use in building up canvas/wood surfaces, ranging from plaster to burlap... to joint compound tape (it comes in polka dots) to paper crinoline. I am excited to have it come out (i think July) because honestley there are a couple spots where I am babbling away...oh and i wasn't looking in the right camera soooo they put a picture of johhny depp inside the camera so i was talking to him....although i am not sure johnny wants to learn how to use modeling paste and stencils....actually maybe he does. i will let you know when the video comes out! peace,love art!

some new pieces i am working on....i am painting on canvas and totally interested in new ways to build up the surface. a blank white canvas always seems so.....white! I am experimented with different mediums, and having fun! a new teaching venue has opened up for me! i will be an instructor at CREATE, the retreat by Cloth Paper Scissors this August right outside Chicago.(click on the Create icon) it is jamming with classes, artists,vendor night etc! i am thrilled it is right before i go back to my teaching job because it will get my creative vibe moving...i like to immerse myself in art right before each school year. so check out the retreat!

I am so thankful my Birdscapes have had the chance to grace the cover of the April May issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine. The last three years I have had the chance to immerse myself in creating and making art, after years of "not" because I was teaching and running around when i wasn't working ,making sure everyone warm and fed and where they were suppose to be except me, because really what i should have been doing( at least part of the time) was making art, but as you know life gets busy and crazy...i went to art school (which i loved) but i always thought....i am not dark and brooding enough for this lifestyle (not that there is anything wrong with dark and brooding) at times i love dark and brooding! but i always wanted to create using odd bits and pieces of life, i wanted to stick wire and plaster on canvas and glue funky little metal pieces on canvas, and scribble words on canvas....until i picked up my first copy of CPS i never knew there was a word for that art....mixed media...thankfully i found this style and it found me because i have been creating ever since...i do not have a walk in closet but i do have a kick ass art studio now, which i am in every week! so paint,drip ,stitch,scribble, stamp and plaster to your hearts content !

new paintings....small 4"x4" canvas (wide edge)...sweet bluebirds, painted,collaged and painted some more. a few reasons for the bird motif....the kids are flying the nest, heading out and about there, lovely but bittersweet...i am actually thinking of getting a bluebird tattoo which got me sketching and painting...had a moment of thinking hmmmm wonder what you need to learn to be a tattoo artist....that would certainly be a career change...also, at a fabulous antique store i saw a paint-by-number painting from the early 50's...there is something about those quirky little scenes that brings back pure nostalgia, i tried to capture that paint-by-number vibe with these paintings....bluebirds!!!

also....some VERY exciting news is that i will be an instructor at the Cloth Paper Scissors Create art retreat in August!!! more on this exciting artful bliss fest soon....with links and info to follow!

i am beyond thrilled and totally surprised-over-the-moon my birdscapes are on the cover of the new CPS!
i knew the article was coming out with those pieces of art but i had no idea they were going to be on the cover.i am so beyond ...*BliSs* last year my snowpeople were on the cover of CPS, and this year the blackbirds....Thank you!!! the cover of celedon is one of my favs, that and periwinkle, the world would be a better place with more celedon, periwinkle and well, glitter...(that is the art teacher in me speaking) my art teacher mantra is...when in doubt add glitter! that and....paint/draw/sculpt like you've never painted/drawn/sculpted before! ....ohhh and don't be a rusher!! ps. also....i'm having an ART ATTACK!

i was playing around with my photo editing and was making some collages of my work....the year in art if you will! i feel i am bursting with ideas lately, could be the long winter....i have a very exciting article coming out in the March/April Cloth Paper Scissors....exciting for me because there are several pieces of art featured and they combine, painting, sculpture, found objects, humor..all things i love and when you can-wham-bam-thank you ma'am- them all together in a series of artwork, well it's a good thing!

these pieces are in the Jan.-Feb. issue of Cloth Paper Scissors....here are some up close and personal shots of the work. mixed media with fabric,papers,wood....etc. and lo-and -behold some stitchery!

i feel love the layering and getting my angst out by scraping and globbing the paint around....and YIKES i sat at a sewing machine! Mrs. VAughn (8th grade home ec) would be proud. Mrs. Vaughn taught me a few things....clean as you go.....break eggs into a custard cup one at a time as you bake, and then add to the recipe,she also taught me how to make a panda pillow, thank you Mrs. Vaughn.

these wooden valentines were created using a small drawer,they were published in this month's issue of Cloth Paper Scissors under Homework...i used paper mache for the heart and collaged the sides and front. they have found new homes for Valentines Day.
